The Challenges of Self Publishing

The Challenges of Self Publishing

Self-publishing has emerged as a popular option for writers to share their works with the world without the need for traditional publishing houses. While it offers many advantages, there are several challenges that aspiring authors may face when venturing into the world of self-publishing. In this blog, we will discuss three major challenges: finding distributors that don’t charge hefty fees, the high costs associated with book printing and delivery, and the most important one – self doubt as things don’t go as planned.

1. Finding Distributors that Don’t Charge Hefty Fees

One of the major challenges of self-publishing is finding reputable distributors who don’t charge exorbitant fees. Self-published authors often rely on online platforms such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Smashwords to reach their readers. These platforms provide a global distribution network that can greatly enhance the visibility of their books. However, some distributors may charge high fees, making it difficult for authors to earn a reasonable profit from their work.

To overcome this challenge, it is essential for authors to thoroughly research and compare the fee structures of various distributors. Some distributors offer more flexible pricing options, while others might take a smaller cut of the royalties. By carefully evaluating the options, authors can find distributors that align with their financial goals and help them reach a wider audience without breaking the bank.

2. High Costs for Book Printing

In self-publishing, authors have the option to release their work in physical print format alongside digital versions. However, printing physical books can be quite costly, especially for authors with limited budgets. The expenses associated with book printing include design, formatting, proofreading, and actual printing costs.

To overcome this challenge, self-published authors can explore alternatives such as print-on-demand services. These services allow authors to print books as they are ordered, eliminating the need for large upfront printing costs. Additionally, authors can consider digital-only publishing, which can significantly reduce the expenses related to physical book printing.

3. Self Doubt when things don’t go as planned

When you are new to this industry and are trying your best to work through the logistics while writing your book, you have to be strong and believe in yourself. Otherwise, you will end your journey before you even began. I have gone through multiple hurdles and have worked really hard to learn the skills required to format, layout and create digital products. I successfully created 6 journals, 2 ebooks and was almost ready with my first non fiction when my Amazon account got closed. I woke up one morning with an email from Amazon that my work had violated their copyright laws. I knew this wasn’t true but it is very hard to work with such giant companies to get any positive response.

So, I accepted that whatever happens, it happens for good! And I moved on. I am now looking at the possibilities of selling my digital work through an online platform like Shopify or Stanstore. And publishing my book using Barnes, Ingram and even selling online through my Facebook page.

Never lose hope.

In conclusion, while self-publishing offers numerous benefits, it also presents its fair share of challenges. Finding distributors that don’t charge hefty fees, avoiding account closure by Amazon, and managing high book printing costs require careful planning, research, and adherence to guidelines. By understanding and addressing these challenges, authors can increase their chances of success in the self-publishing industry.
